ALIOTH (USA) – Channeling Unclean Spirits (MC, Starlight Temple Society 2006) Review

ALIOTH (USA) - Channeling Unclean Spirits (MC, Starlight Temple Society 2006)1. Intro
2.The Channeling
3. Invocation I
4. Apocryphal Dimensions
5. Invocation II
6. Call of the Deep

This demo consists of three songs, an intro and two acoustic passages that greatly enhance the arcane occult vibe that is emitted throughout its length. Riffs are Varathron-like strings of major chords that symbolise a drive towards conquest of the material world and entry into all-pervading yet indetectable forces governing the universe. The instrumental rhythm never changes except during fundamental transitions in songs, which consist of two or three different riffs. A throaty roar imposes itself as the loudest protagonist of Alioth, though it is never over-used. The mechanical sound of the drum-machine is not excessively distracting, though the promise of human drumming on future releases means that the organic, earthy aspects of the music will be highlighted- surely a scenario in which a song like ‘Call Of The Deep’, with its menacing interludes in the best Greek tradition, will benefit much.
